This severely damaged portrait was of great sentimental value to its owner, as it was the only visual record remaining of the client’s grandfather. Upon arrival at the studio the surface of the photograph appeared dull and had heavy soiling, paint spatter, punctures, and a mysterious, waxy deposit covering part of the sitters left eye. The support board to which the photograph was mounted on was also in poor condition and required mending around the entire periphery. After stabilizing, extensive cleaning, and retouching areas of image loss, the rich and velvety tone of the photograph can truly be appreciated once again, and the memory of a beloved family member is preserved.
